2013 Star Spectactular

The ADS Star Spectacular is the Flag-Ship Event for the Queensland Branch of the Australian Dancing Society. It is appropriately housed in the very corporate Logan Entertainment Centre and whilst the LEC is more expensive than other venues it does have all the ‘bells and whistles’ required for such an Event.
The smooth running of the competition is testament to the well oiled team that has developed in Queensland, from Front of House to Comperes, all ran as it should.
Noticeably competitor numbers were down but not evenly across all styles. For example the Adult Age Division there were 10 & 11 couples in Latin & Standard but only 4 couples in the New Vogue. This trend also occurred at the South Australian Open the previous week.
Is New Vogue dead? It seems that way in the Adult Division for sure. What about the Masters you say ... well there were only 2 couples in the Masters 1 Open New Vogue, Masters 1 Open Standard had 6.
There were also discussions about couples that chose not to dance for fear that they may elevate to a higher grade prior to the Australian Championships now only a few weeks away. What sport designs a grading system that actively encourages couples not to participate?
On another note, Sigurdur Sigurdsson & Annalisa Zoanetti joined the local talent in both the Latin and the Show Dance Events. I am sure the Competition Organisers appreciate the effort made by this couple, I saw that the crowd certainly appreciated their presence.
The Show Dance, (certainly a highlight of the evening program), was fought out by, Sigurdur & Annalisa, and Queensland couple Justin & Amy Sharrock. Two very different types of Show and I was very happy not to have to decide the winner. Justin & Amy provided an extremely entertaining comic routine while Sigurdur & Annalisa danced an emotional Rumba. Sigurdur & Annalisa’s Rumba was superb but was it really a Show Dance or their competition routine with a couple of lifts, the judges decided it was and they became the 2013 Show Dance Champions.
